The current program descends from an earlier graduate program in radiological sciences sponsored jointly by the Departments of Radiology and Radiation Oncology. This master’s degree granting program flourished in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, but was discontinued in 1988 because of dwindling faculty resources. In the absence of such a program, the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) began to award graduate degrees for work in areas which would have fit readily into either a radiological sciences or medical physics curriculum, including topics in medical imaging and radiotherapy. Collaborating with the Department of Radiation Oncology, Department of BME developed a series of courses to initiate a medical physics curriculum.
The complete medical physics curriculum has been offered to students since 2007. The Medical Physics Graduate Program at the University of Miami received the initial accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs (CAMPEP) for the period of 2013 – 12/31/2016. Then, the program continued receiving re-accreditation from CAMPEP for periods of 1/1/2017 – 12/31/2021 and 1/1/2022 – 6/30/2027.
