As a large fraction of the global population lives in urban areas, a substantial amount of resources are utilized for developing, maintaining, and operating the built environment and urban infrastructure.

Furthermore, the frequency and impacts of natural disasters has increased in the last few decades, in part driven by climate change. Therefore, holistically addressing the interlinked issues of sustainability and resilience is key to ensure the survival of urban regions and especially for coastal communities. An important intellectual underpinning is to relate, develop, and tackle the fundamental concepts associated with sustainability and resilience.  These can include a range of diverse issues such as the current COVID-19 pandemic to climate change and hurricane impacts. Given our unique geographic location and the transdisciplinary expertise of our faculty, the College of Engineering is well positioned to lead in efforts to develop sustainable and resilient communities.
